Innumerable waterfalls cascade into the river along its length. Each can vary considerably in size depending on the recent rainfall in the vicinity. They look best after rain, but canoeists like me like the sunshine.

On the 9th February 2002 I was camped at the DOC Campsite at the Ngaporo Rapid. That night, it rained — heavily — at least 120 mm of rain fell. The river of course rose, and the waterfalls across the river turned into rushing torrents. Elsewhere in the Whanganui District, the River Road was washed out, as was the Parapara.
